Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the concept of “you don’t know what you don’t know,” and “knowledge is power.” Those two statements and how they became entrenched in my teaching philosophy are rooted in my own life experience. I was the first person in my family to go to university. Coming from a rural Alberta high school whose students did not pursue undergraduate degrees, no one explained to me how university worked. My high school principal even discouraged me from applying to university. As I worked through my undergraduate degree it constantly felt like there was this guide of unwritten rules that I could not figure out. I did not even know what questions to ask in order to fully understand the functioning of a major university. Once I started my MA and had professors start to explain what goes on behind the scenes, why decisions were being made in a particular way, how grading works (and the biases behind it), my grades improved significantly. It also made me re-evaluate everything I thought I knew about academia. From this experience, my guiding principle when teaching is to be as transparent as possible with my students. I try to give them all the answers to the questions I never knew how to ask when I was in their shoes – and empower them to ask their own without fear of judgement. Since the pursuit of knowledge is never ending, I foster a climate that allows students (and myself) to admit when they (we) do not know something and encourage the search for answers and solutions.

Passion for the subject matter is key to convey the material properly to the students. When I think back to the most powerful instructors I have had, it is not always the most knowledgeable individuals who stand out in my mind, but instead it is the few who were passionate about the material. Those who came into class excited to share knowledge with their students. It is also critical to showcase a curious attitude, one that is open to (re)searching answers we do not know, rather than wallow in the lack of knowledge itself. Over my years serving as a teaching assistant, my students routinely remarked that the level of approachability I was able to bring into the classroom benefited their learning experience. My goal for every student I have is that they are empowered to ask questions and challenge the world around them.
